EIS Investmnent

Introduced in 1994, EIS allows eligible investors to receive a range of tax reliefs in exchange for investing in qualifying UK businesses.

EIS is intended to:

  • Support entrepreneurial growth

  • Encourage innovation

  • Increase access to growth capital

  • Reward investors for taking higher risk

Capital is at risk. Tax reliefs depend on individual circumstances and may change.

How EIS Investment Works

When you invest under EIS:

You subscribe for new shares in a qualifying UK company.

The company uses the funds to grow its business.

You hold the shares for a minimum of 3 years.

You may benefit from tax reliefs and potential capital growth.

EIS investments are typically long-term and illiquid.

What Companies Qualify for EIS?

To qualify, companies must meet HMRC criteria, including:

  • UK permanent establishment

  • Gross assets under £15m before investment

  • Fewer than 250 full-time employees

  • Carrying out a qualifying trade

  • Not listed on a recognised stock exchange

HMRC approval is required before tax relief can be claimed.

Key Characteristics of EIS

  • Higher-risk investments

  • Early-stage or growth-focused businesses

  • Minimum 3-year holding period

  • Long-term exit horizon (often 5–7+ years)

  • No guarantee of returns

EIS is not a deposit account and is not capital protected.
